A new report published by the FAO highlights that the variability in wheat yields observed in Morocco is largely explained by temperature variations, high temperatures, drought and heavy precipitation.

This Climate Change negatively impacts the yields of wheat cultivation in Morocco, knowing that over the period 2000-2019, this phenomenon caused a drop in average yields of around 0.1 tonnes per hectare, i.e. approximately 2% of the average return observed during this period.

In this perspective, Morocco intends to continue its mobilization of agricultural land dedicated to this crop through advanced irrigation, the objective of which would be to reach, in the medium term, 1 million hectares, in particular to strengthen its sovereignty over cereals. , which will reduce the country’s dependence on imports and, therefore, ensure sovereignty over this vital resource.

Still, the Minister of Agriculture, during the opening of the 9th edition of the “Grain & Millings Expo”, International Exhibition of Cereal Industries, on October 4 in Casablanca indicated that to defuse the pressure on prices agricultural inputs, the State is on a project of a support mechanism of up to 50% and that this aid will go in particular to nitrogen fertilizers.
