Revolutionizing Surgery: World’s First Robot-Assisted Lung Tumor Removal using Augmented Reality Technology

2023-10-17 12:06:33

Technological innovation continues to push the boundaries of modern medicine. Recently, a surgical feat was achieved at Erasmus MC, where surgeons successfully removed a lung tumor with the help of augmented reality technology developed by Orsi Innotech. This robot-assisted lung tumor operation using augmented reality is a world first, according to the press release published Tuesday.

During this procedure, virtual images of the tumor, blood vessels and airways were superimposed on the patient’s lung, allowing surgeons to navigate inside the patient with unparalleled precision.

The best way to understand the role of augmented reality in surgery is to compare it to a GPS. It guides the surgeon, allowing him to operate with increased precision. Details that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye, such as the presence of an artery under a specific part of the lung, can be clearly visualized using this technology.

The advantages of this technology

Integrating augmented reality into robot-assisted operations has many advantages. Not only can it lead to faster interventions, but it can also reduce the number of post-operative complications. Additionally, this technology might accelerate the learning curve for surgeons in training, allowing them to master surgical techniques more quickly.

Merging patient-specific virtual and deformable lung models, created by MedicalVR, with augmented reality technology from Orsi Innotech, in collaboration with NVIDIA, has given rise to these first successful use cases. It is worth noting that in February 2023, a kidney tumor was also successfully removed during a robot-assisted operation using augmented reality at OLV Ziekenhuis Aalst. This technology is currently being validated in various surgical fields.
