This article has been updated with the final box office figures for the weekend of October 13-15, 2023. These confirm that with $92.8 million, Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour ultimately does not beat the record for the best October start held by Joker (96,2 millions).

For once, it’s a concert that dominates the American (and worldwide) box office this weekend of October 13 to 15. The film Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour signs a record start, far ahead The Exorcist, Paw Patrol et Saw X.

Taylor Swift, reine du box-office mondial

The Taylor Swift effect strikes once more. The film Taylor Swift : The Eras Tourcentered on the tour of the same name, is firmly at the top of the American box office this weekend with no less than 96 million dollars raked in.

This stratospheric figure is all the more impressive given that the film was announced just six weeks ago, and without much promotion. In addition, its long duration (2h48) limits the number of screenings per day.

This fantastic start has already set several records. Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour thus broke the record for the best start for a concert film, far ahead Justin Bieber : Never Say Never and its 29.5 million. Even crazier: Swift’s film did better in three days than the career total of Bieber’s ($73 million).

Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour also shatters the AMC pre-sales record (an American cinema chain) with 26 million dollars collected in 24 hours, beating the previous record of Spider-Man : No Way Home (16.9 million). In total, the film earned $37 million across the United States even before its release, the second best pre-sales in history behind Avengers : Endgame (50 million)… and ahead Star Wars: The Force Awakens (20 millions).

These calculations are still estimates, but Taylor Swift might well add another record to the list once the final figures are known: that of the best opening for a film of October, currently held by Joker in 2019, and its 96,202,337 million dollars. A figure to which the industry will obviously be attentive.

Finally, the film recorded 32 million dollars in several other countries (United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Germany, etc.), which brings its worldwide cumulative total to 128 million dollars in a short weekend. As a reminder, Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour was released in French cinemas on October 13.

In the rest of the ranking, The Exorcist – Devotion records another $11 million (-58%) for its second weekend. This brings its US total to 44.9 million, and its world total to 84 million.

If this will be enough to cover its budget (30 million), we are far from the phenomenon hoped for by Universal, which still paid 400 million dollars for the distribution rights of the next opuses of the franchise.

Behind him, Paw Patrol: the super patrol finishes 3rd with 7 million greenbacks, and is close to the global score of the first film (151 million dollars). With $41.4 million earned in the United States, Saw X surpasses the previous film Jigsaw to become the 7th biggest hit in the horror franchise.

Finally, The Creator remains in 5th place with an additional $4.3 million in its bag. At this rate, Gareth Evans’ film will probably not reach the symbolic mark of 100 million worldwide.
