This announcement caused an outcry in June. At the end of the National Housing Refoundation Committee, the government decided to largely restrict the zero-rate loan (PTZ), by refocusing it on certain types of property and certain areas in France.

From now on, the zero-interest loan aims to help first-time buyers, particularly in the purchase of their main residence, until 2027. But faced with a serious housing crisis, the government is backpedaling and intends to extend the system to more people. Thus, six million additional French people might benefit from the PTZ, the zero-interest loan, according to Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy.

Promote the creation of housing

For this, the government has already announced, ten days ago, the passage of 154 new municipalities into so-called tense zones, these zones where the real estate market has more demands than offers. Places particularly targeted by the system, which should therefore help French people access property and encourage the creation of housing.

Other measures will also be included in the government’s project, specifies Jean-René Cazeneuve, the general rapporteur of the Budget. “We are going to raise the wealth threshold from which we can access, we are going to raise the percentage of the loan that can be made with the PTZ. So in the end, there will be more people who will be eligible for the zero-interest loan” underlines the MP.

An unprecedented housing crisis

Good news for many French people, especially those who want to buy a new apartment in a very popular town. On the other hand, to have your new house built, you will still have to wait. “The government has not mentioned a return of the zero-interest loan for the construction of individual houses. It’s a real hole in the racket,” judges Sandrine Allonier, spokesperson for VousFinancer speaking to Europe 1.

A point that annoys many professionals as the construction sector is experiencing an unprecedented crisis and anticipates the loss of 150,000 jobs by 2025, according to the French Building Federation.
