A shooting broke out this Monday on Boulevard d’Ypres in Brussels. Two people died and two others were injured.
The Brussels-Capital Ixelles police zone confirms the gunshots at the boulevard du Neuvième de Ligne and Sainctelette: “we are talking regarding two people dead.” The two victims are believed to be Swedish. The motivations for the act are terrorist.
A video is circulating under the name of Slayem Slouma in which the attacker explains that he took revenge by killing three people wearing a Swedish jersey. The Swedish team plays this evening at the King Baudouin stadium. The attacker also expresses his link with the Islamic State.
The killer dressed in a fluorescent jacket is still said to be on the run.
A witness on site tells us the scene: “It was 7 p.m., I was going home. In an adjacent street I hear gunshots and directly a crowd including law enforcement officers. I saw the victim less than five meters away. A man around 40 years old. And then a black Mercedes Vito with two or three bullet holes in it. Inside, the driver was dead. The injured passenger, half his body full of blood, but conscious.”
The alert level has increased to 4, its maximum, synonymous with a serious and imminent threat.
