Global Health Summit: A decisive year for action on global health

This Sunday, October 15, Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health and Prevention spoke, via video, at the Summit on Global Health, which takes place until October 17 in Berlin. The opportunity for the minister to express himself on the need to continue mobilization efforts to effectively combat the threats of new pandemics.

More than 100 nations represented, more than 300 speakers, the Global Health Summit is an essential event to take action in favor of global health. For almost three days, representatives of States, civil society and the private sector are invited to discuss to respond to a problem: “ Make this a decisive year for action in favor of global health ».

SARS, Ebola, Zika, COVID-19… The beginning of the 21st century is marked by the multiplication and severity of health crises. Because these crises are global, mobilization to strengthen their prevention and management must also be global. This is the objective of Global Health Summit to which the Minister of Health and Prevention, Aurélien Rousseau, participated by video. He underlined, on this occasion, the need to continue international mobilization, whether by the adoption of the “Pandemic Treaty” or by the revision of the international health regulations or by the increase in funding. The minister also called for better consideration of climate and environmental issues. And for good reason: the multiplication of extreme climatic episodes is a real public health threat for which countries must be better prepared. Aurélien Rousseau concluded his message by underlining the French ambition to make prevention a lever for equal opportunities in health.

The Global Health Summit comes a few days following the launch, in Lyon, of the new French global health strategy. The minister thus recalled that the new strategy will guide French action until 2027, and is fully consistent and complementary with that of the European Union. A joint European action was also launched on October 13, under the leadership of the French Ministry of Health and Prevention, to ensure the greatest impact and visibility of thehe contribution of the European Union to global health.

Three days of discussions to act in favor of global health

France was represented by Antoine Saint-Denis, Delegate for European and International Affairs and his Deputy Delegate, Jérôme Weinbach for the delegation from the Ministry of Health and Prevention. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Secretary of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships and Anne-Claire Amprou, Ambassador for Global Health, represented France for the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Country representatives were able to discuss:

Lessons learned from Covid-19, both on prevention, preparation and response to future pandemics;

Reaffirmation of the commitment to Universal Health Coverage;

Sustainable health for all individuals;

G7/G20 measures to improve global health equity and security;

Harnessing digital technologies in global health;

Innovations to accelerate the fight once morest tuberculosis.

This edition was also the opportunity to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization.

What is the Global Health Summit?

Initiated in 2009, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, the Global Health Summit is one of the most important global events in the field of global health. It brings together more than 2,500 representatives from all fields, scientific, political, associative and economic, from more than 100 countries and whose objective is to highlight their global or sectoral priorities. According to the WHS mission statement published in The Lancet in 2009, its mission is consistent with the recognition of health as a fundamental human right by the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and promotes a broad and grounded approach on the science of global health development, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its center.
