You may have heard of this trick to speed up your WiFi speed using aluminum foil. Well it works! However, we must put things into perspective a little.
Surrounding your modem with aluminum foil on three sides to concentrate all the power of your internet in the direction of your devices, and thus speed up your network, does it really work? You may have heard of this tip, but before you try it at home, here’s what you need to know…
First of all, why does it work? The mechanism is actually quite simple: aluminum has a reputation for blocking waves, or even making them reflect, which is true to a certain point. By thus creating a screen bouncing the waves escaping towards the back of your modem, you concentrate all the energy thereof on the front of it, which, if properly oriented, should convey waves directly to your devices.
That’s the theory. Now, let’s talk a little regarding practice. First of all, and this seems obvious but still needs to be clarified: don’t expect miracles. At most you can expect a slight boost in your network performance.
Especially since the improvement of the modem depends largely on the system used, the nature of the modem, and even the type of aluminum. For example, if this technique worked much better with old equipment, it becomes less relevant with our already very efficient modern technology.
If you want to indulge in the joys of the aluminum-boosted modem, here are some tips: first of all, you want to create a sort of “sounding board” for the waves from your Modem. To this end, first build a structure with a material that is both solid but also malleable (cardboard is, for example, very suitable), and form a sort of “triptych” with curved edges that might encompass your entire modem. Obtain aluminum sheets to surround your structure. Apparently the thickness of the aluminum can make a difference, so if you have several types of aluminum with varying thicknesses, don’t hesitate to test more than one to see if there is a difference.
Adjust the distance between your modem and the structure to find the optimal situation with which you get the best performance. Also try to more or less “fold” the wings of the triptych for the same purpose.
However, don’t necessarily expect great success either, because it is not completely impossible that you will not see any improvement in your network. While this tip is an interesting physical experiment that can give you a very negligible increase in your network speed, it is not a miracle solution, and we still advise you to look into other methods if you have a real connection speed problem.
