PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women’s soccer (7-6-3, 3-4-1) dropped a 2-0 final score to No. 20 Michigan State (10-3-3, 5-1-2) on Sunday at Yurcak Field.
The Spartans scored once in each half – in the 41st and 53rd minutes – and stopped all three of Rutgers’ shots on goal in the shutout win to move into second place in the Big Ten. Rutgers outshot MSU, 6-3, in the second half, with Riley Tiernan and Allison Lowrey shooting on target and forcing Spartan saves.
Becci Fluchel took Rutgers’ shot on goal in the first half. Michigan State goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks made three saves in the win.
MSU took 16 shots to Rutgers’ 10 and held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The opponents combined for 15 corners kicks with MSU leading 9-5 in the category. Twenty-nine fouls were whistled in the game, of which 18 were called on the Spartans.
Two match days remain in the 2023 regular season. Rutgers, tied for the eighth and final Big Ten Tournament seed with Michigan with 10 points (Rutgers owns the head-to-head tiebreaker), visits Ohio State (sixth place, 13 points) on Thurs., Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. on Big Ten Network before hosting Northwestern (12th place, seven points) on Sun., Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
