Combating Anti-Semitism in German Sports: Maccabi Calls for Task Force with Football Association and Olympic Sports Federation

The head of the German Jewish sports organization Maccabi called for the formation of a task force to combat anti-Semitism with the German Football Association and the German Olympic Sports Federation.

Alon Mayer, head of the Maccabi organization, told the German radio station “Deutschlandfunk” that the security situation is “more dangerous” these days for athletes with the “spread” of the conflict in the Middle East to Germany.

Mayer added that the German Football Association or the German Olympic Sports Association did not issue any statements of solidarity in the wake of the attack launched by the Palestinian Hamas movement on Israel early last week (Operation Al-Aqsa Flood).

“It is true that there were bilateral talks and phone calls. But in my opinion, this is certainly not enough,” Mayer explained.

Mayer continued, “Not only is support required, but also facing the corresponding consequences. A working group should be formed in the future to avoid such hatred and inflammatory slogans, which also occurred in German League (Bundesliga) matches and the Championship League has previously dealt with.”

Mayer stressed that the main danger to Jewish athletes lies on the soccer field, in lower league teams and youth competitions, and from “competitors with an Arab-Islamic background.”

German Agriculture Minister Cem Ozdemir called on his country’s majority community to make more efforts to combat hatred of Jews in Germany, following the Palestinian resistance movement’s attacks on Israel early last week.

During the past few days, the President of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf, also expressed his solidarity with Israel, during talks he held with Ron Prosor, the Israeli Ambassador to Germany, and Moshe Zoares, the President of the Israeli Football Association.

A minute of silence was observed before the international friendly match that the German national team played once morest its host, the United States national team, yesterday, Saturday.

“In these difficult times, German football stands firmly alongside our friends and partners in Israel,” Neuendorf said.

At the same time, Moroccan Nassir Mazraoui, the Bavarian team player, posted a video clip on his Instagram account, wishing the Palestinian people victory over Israel. Bayern’s management did not issue any immediate comment on this.
