Today, Yamaha unveiled a new and improved handlebarless version of the Yamaha Motoroid 2 electric motorcycle. This handlebarless electric motorcycle is getting closer and closer to reality.

When Yamaha first revealed the Motoroid electric motorcycle concept in 2017, it looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. One of the strangest concept bikes in all of motorcycling has been reworked for 2023. Yamaha has revealed a second version of its futuristic Motoroid concept. The latter features an adjustable swing arm, AI facial recognition and the ability to self-balance.

The Yamaha Motoroid 2 shows great freedom in its design

It renounces much of the mechanics of traditional motorcycles. The rear swingarm provides suspension like most conventional motorcycles. It also incorporates a pivot which allows the rear half of the motorcycle to tilt independently of the front. The rear houses a hub motor that’s powered by a rather modest-looking underarm battery pack.

The front fork provides steering in a non-traditional method. New Atlas describes it as functioning “wonderfully normally” compared to the rest of the motorcycle. In fact, there are no handlebars like on a classic motorcycle. In reality, it’s unclear how the front fork turns or how the pivoting rear swingarm might possibly help with steering.

Electric motorcycle without handlebars: cable to ride alone without anyone on board

Self-driving technology is becoming more common in production vehicles, although it is currently limited to four-wheeled cars and trucks.

Yamaha designed the Motoroid 2 to be a autonomous electric motorcycle without handlebars nor any other standard command. It has gyroscopes and image recognition AI systems to stand and navigate the roads with or without a pilot.

When operating without a driver, the motorcycle can use facial recognition and gesture control to follow a person. A large center stand is designed to lower when the Motoroid 2 slows to park. The stand can be raised independently when the motorcycle resumes its journey. A blue ambient lighting highlights most of the new bodywork. The latter also rises above the false reservoir area.

Yamaha plans to showcase the Motoroid 2 prototype at the Events Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo next month.

It is unclear whether Yamaha plans to release a production model of the motorcycle. However, its continued development suggests that the auto giant is working to incorporate at least some of its features into future motorcycles.
