Ultra-processed foods (ULTs), such as ice cream, chips and cookies, are as addictive as nicotine, cocaine and heroin, reveals a recent US study reported by the New York Post.
The research, which draws on 281 studies across 36 countries, indicates that 14% of adults are addicted to TUEs.
However, other studies have in the past established a link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and the decline in cognitive functions, cancer, psychological distress as well as early death.
The addictive aspect of TUEs was analyzed under criteria such as excessive consumption, uncontrollable craving and continuous ingestion of these foods. These are the same criteria that are used to assess drug dependence.
The reason behind the addiction created by ultra-processed foods, however, remains a mystery.
Some scientists believe that it is the combination of several elements that makes TUEs highly addictive.
Natural foods usually have more carbohydrates or fats, while TUEs stand out for having a very high level of both.
Foods with high levels of sugar or fat make healthy food less appealing.
Additionally, eating TUEs creates a rush of dopamine, then a sudden crash, which creates a never-ending cycle of consumption, as is the case with alcohol and drugs.
However, as with other addictive substances, ultra-processed foods do not have the same effect on everyone. Some will develop an addiction quickly, while others may use it in moderation.
One of the issues raised is the fact that TUEs are found everywhere and therefore it is very difficult to escape from them.
“Stopping eating TUEs today is like trying to quit smoking in the 1960s,” says author and doctor Chris van Tulleken.
