British researchers representing Queen Mary University in London have discovered a more protracted and previously unknown form of ARVI. The results of the study were published in the Lancet journal.
In total, scientists surveyed over 10,000 people, asking them to name at least 16 main symptoms they experience during a protracted form of coronavirus infection. In addition to shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue, body aches also made it onto the list. Then the experts tried to determine how common the signs of the disease were by dividing the volunteers into 3 groups.
The first included those who associated the symptoms directly with the coronavirus, the second included participants who associated the symptoms with another respiratory infection, and the third included those who had no more than the above-mentioned ailments. The results of the study show that the first group was the most extensive, but an equally interesting factor was revealed – there is a more protracted form of ARVI, in which the negative consequences for the body appear much longer.
Signs of this form of the disease include diarrhea, abdominal pain and cough. Even 10 weeks following the diagnosis of infection, patients were bothered by the above symptoms. However, scientists plan to continue to study the form of lingering flu or colds, since the diagnosis of these conditions is extremely complicated due to the lack of precise terms.
