Israel wants to eliminate Hamas’ military and political leadership.

At the top of the list is Yahya Sinwar, the highest-ranking Hamas official in the Gaza Strip.

Sinwar is the second most powerful member of Hamas following Ismail Haniyeh.

The Hamas leader in the Gaza StripYahya Sinwar, and his entire command team “are in our sights,” Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) international spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht told reporters on Saturday.

Hecht was speaking as the Israeli Air Force killed Merad Abu Merad, the head of Hamas’ air surveillance system in Gaza City. He is said to have been partly responsible for the October 7 massacre of Israelis in the western Negev. “This is a massacre that Israel will never forget,” said Hecht.

“Yahya Sinwar is the face of evil”

Israel released images Friday of Hamas terrorists holding up babies following murdering their parents in the south of the country. «Yahya Sinwar is the face of evil. He is the mastermind behind it, like Osama bin Laden it was. He built his career murdering Palestinians when he realized they were collaborators. “So he became known as the butcher of Khan Younis,” continued Hecht. Israel will “get this man,” he said, adding: “It might be a long campaign.” Sinwar was designated a terrorist by the United States in 2015.

Yahya Sinwar was born in 1962 in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis. He attended the Islamic University of Gaza, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Arabic studies. Sinwar was arrested for the first time in 1982 while he was a student. In prison, he made friends with Palestinian activists and decided to dedicate himself to the Palestinian cause. In 1985, Sinwar founded Hamas’s security department, whose mission was to punish “moral offenders” and kill Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel. His alleged enthusiasm for executing collaborators led Israeli interrogators to refer to him as “the Butcher of Khan Younis.”

In 1988, Sinwar was arrested once more and sentenced to four life terms in an Israeli prison for attempted murder and grievous bodily harm by sabotage. While in custody, Sinwar’s life was saved when he underwent brain surgery to reportedly remove a tumor. Sinwar was released in 2011 as one of a total of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners who were convicted of a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalitwho was captured in 2006 and held hostage by Hamas in the Gaza Strip for five years.

Sinwar is blamed for the detention, torture and murder of a Hamas commander, Mahmoud Ishtiwi, who was initially jailed on embezzlement charges in 2015. Later, following his murder, Ishtiwi was accused of committing “moral crimes.”
