Austria is taking serious steps in order to soon introduce the new national digital personal identification system, ID Austria. The news that the Austrian government intends to implement the transition on December 5 has recently come to light. Handy-Signatur, the electronic identity platform that citizens use to access various government services, will be phased out. The system in question is often called mobile signature, as it works on any phone that can receive SMS, that is, short messages. Currently, 1.5 million people already use ID Austria, while 2.8 million still prefer Handy-Signatur. However, all Austrian residents will have to switch by December 5 at the latest. ID Austria, which will be mandatory for all people over the age of 14, meets the strictest security and data protection standards. The local government’s goal with this innovation is to make government services even more seamless and reliable. The transition is easier for those who already have a Handy-Signatur profile, as they will be able to register for ID Austria with their existing data. All they need is the mobile application called “Digitales Amt”. However, when switching from Handy-Signatur, only the basic functions of ID Austria become available, but not the full range of services. Foreigners staying in the country can also get access to the basic tools. Residents who have not yet used Handy-Signatur can do so until December or register directly for the ID Austria system. On the occasion of this type of registration, the individual must appear in person at a designated office in order to confirm his identity. For this, they need to present a valid document, such as a passport, driver’s license or residence permit. ID Austria facilitates personal identification and will also replace official documents. Recently, the Austrian government has placed particular emphasis on digitization and technological development. Despite this, we reported that locals are doing everything they can to avoid the end of cash.
