In the process of selling the club, owned since 2005 by the Glazer family, the Qatari banker was in competition with the British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, founder of the petrochemical group Ineos and whose group already controls the football clubs of Nice and Lausanne as well as as the Ineos Grenadiers cycling team.
The American owners had announced in November 2022 that the club’s board of directors was exploring “all strategic alternatives, including new investment in the club, a sale or other transactions involving the company”.
The Glazer family acquired Manchester United in 2005 for around €910 million, a takeover financed largely by debt. She is now asking for 6.9 billion euros for the club.
According to the BBC, Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani’s offer was for 100% control of the club’s capital, with a promise to liquidate its debt, and amounted to a total of 5.8 billion euros, but discussions were broken this week.
According to press reports, Jim Ratcliffe also recently threw in the towel for a total takeover, but is now ready to enter the capital as a minority shareholder, whereas he initially wanted to make a majority acquisition. The billionaire is expected to acquire 25% of the club for around 1.7 billion euros, according to the Daily Mail.
Twenty times champion of England, Manchester United is losing momentum. Its last Premier League title dates back to 2013. After eight days, the club is currently 10th in the championship and began its European campaign in the Champions League with two consecutive defeats, unheard of in its history.
