This is a golden opportunity to talk regarding an issue that affects a large number of Quebecers: cybersecurity.

“Unfortunately, the majority of people, as long as they have not experienced a disaster, we are talking here regarding an IT disaster, they will not see the relevance of investing, both effort and money,” explains cybersecurity expert Steve Waterhouse.

According to a recent study, only 20% of SMEs in the provinces describe their level of protection once morest cyberattacks as excellent. The Hackfest is intended to be an opportunity to discuss issues and solutions to counter them.

“This is what will improve security in the country. There is a lack of investment. When we talk in the news every day regarding security breaches, it is often the lack of budget or the lack of understanding. It always happens to someone else and not to me,” says the co-founder of the event, Patrick Mathieu.

If the protection of sensitive data is a fundamental issue for businesses, it is also essential for individuals to seek to protect their personal information. Vigilance is required.

“It’s the same as our personal hygiene: we have to take care of it. Should you give… Like a toothbrush? Are you passing the toothbrush to someone else? No. The password is the same thing. We don’t share it. Do we need to take care of our clothes from time to time? Yes. For our systems to last a long time, we must update them, keep them up to date in order to prevent them from having vulnerabilities,” illustrates Steve Waterhouse.
