How to activate “Monk Mode”

Productivity is one of the obsessions of this century. No wonder, we live with permanent distractions that intervene at all times and there is never enough time for what we plan to do. It is then that a thousand and one practices arise to optimize time. Some are well known such as the Pomodoro technique, Seinfeld, among many others.

In recent months, on TikTok (perhaps one of the social networks that most contributes to the interruption and procrastination of millions of people) a technique called “Monk Mode” has become fashionable.

It consists of turning everything off. Disconnect from all devices and actions that have the capacity to interrupt our tasks. Once we are surrounded by discouraged objects, carry out the activity we want to do until we finish it. Put our head, all our senses, in total focus, without interruptions.

That self-discipline to remain isolated, typical of monks, is what gives this technique its name. Unlike Pomodoro, which proposes to work focused for periods of 25 minutes and then rest; Monk Mode works until we finish the task or activity we are doing.

To incorporate it into daily life, those who practice it recommend these 4 simple steps.


1. Use it for measurable issues, that have a beginning and an end. For example, a practical work for the University, a daily reading time or answering emails.

2. Having healthy habits such as exercise and good nutrition later helps to achieve the necessary concentration.

3. Now, turn off and get away from all kinds of distractions that may interfere.

4. And finally: isolation. That is, remain alone until the task is finished. If we are at home, go to a room alone or find a place where no one lives.

Of course, Monk Mode is a personal choice and will have as different results as there are individuals who practice it. It is curious that, for many people – myself included – it is so difficult for us to eliminate distractions from our daily lives. That we grab the cell phone to check the calendar and end up watching a channel of funny videos of Golden dogs or a strict isolation technique to improve productivity and become quasi-monks.
