Manchester City is at the top of the ranking (Archyde.com)
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) published the update of the club ranking according to the period from October 2022 to September 2023 and without a doubt there are surprises in the formation of a list that includes 414 teams from all over the planet.
At the top of everything is Manchester City with 304 points. Pep Guardiola’s team is in this position without a doubt due to the conquest of the Champions League in the 2022/23 season, a campaign in which it also won the Premier League and the FA Cup. This way it surpasses Real Madrid, which came second with 291 points. The podium is closed by Inter Milan, finalist in the last Champions League.
Surprises are beginning to appear with Porto in fourth place, just ahead of Al Ahly of Egypt, brand new winner of the African Champions, and Flamengo, which won the 2022 Copa Libertadores. Seventh is Manchester United and the TOP 10 Palmeiras, Fiorentina complete and Napoli and RB Leipzig are tied.
Among the first 100 positions there are clubs from 33 countries, 21 of them from Europe, 7 from South America, 4 from Africa and only one from Asia. In addition, the one with the most representatives in Brazil, with 11 teams. Then, with 7 representatives, Argentina, England, Germany and Italy tie. Even in the Top 200, Brazil continues to be the country with the most presence, with 13.
One of the big surprises is that the best placed Argentine is Defensa y Justicia, in 38th place. Florencio Varela’s Halcón reached the semifinal of the current edition of the Copa Sudamericana, an instance in which it was defeated by Liga de Quito, and in the domestic championship it was one of the best in 2022 and is among the four best in the 2023 annual table. The next is Estudiantes de La Plata, 44, ahead of Boca Juniors, 50, and Racing, 51. Further back they are San Lorenzo, 64, River Plate, 67, Newell’s, 89, and Argentinos Juniors, 102.
In the ranking you can see the fall of several powerful clubs such as Barcelona from Spain, located 23 on the list, Milan, 26, Liverpool, 32, PSG, 41, and Ajax, 62, among others. While the best placed in Concacaf is the León of Mexico, 104, and the one in Asia is the Al Hilal FC of Saudi Arabia, 100.
It should be noted that the IFFHS gives different values to each competition. Victories in continental tournaments have a higher score than in domestic competitions and at the same time there is discrimination between countries and instances, so a victory in a minor league is not equivalent to the same as a victory in the final of an international competition.
