Bear Encounter: Firefighters Rescue Trapped Dog from Tennessee Cave

Firefighters trying to save a dog who fell into a cave in a Tennessee woods got the surprise of their lives when they discovered a bear sleeping in the same crevice.

The dog, named Charlie, was trapped in the cave 12 meters underground for three days before the Walden Creeks County Fire Department, regarding 100 kilometers south of Nashville, intervened.

Firefighters arrived on site Tuesday with a pulley system allowing them to descend into the cave, reports CNN.

The fire safety service indicates in a post on Facebook that their intervention “took a turn when a firefighter turned around and found a bear sleeping one meter under her.”

The team was able to leave the cave without the animal waking up.

Firefighters returned to the scene on Wednesday and were finally able to save the dog, the bear having fled in the meantime.

“Charlie was trapped in the cave for three days, and spent part of that time with a bear regarding two years old and weighing 200 pounds,” the Facebook post added. He was dehydrated and hungry, but otherwise in good condition.”

The dog was then able to find its owner safely.
