Ministry of National Defense Provides Support for Return of Koreans Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense, the Air Force’s KC-330 ‘Cygnus’ multipurpose aerial refueling transport aircraft carrying 220 people, including Koreans, Japanese, and Singaporeans, landed on the runway of Seoul Airport at around 10:45 pm on the 14th.

The military transport plane departed from Korea around noon on the 13th, arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, on the followingnoon of the 13th local time, and departed for Korea once more in the early morning of the 14th.

Previously, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “As the armed conflict is rapidly intensifying and a military operation in the Gaza Strip is observed to be imminent, we judged that it was necessary to provide support for Korean citizens to return home as airlines, including Korean Air, suspended or canceled their flights to Tel Aviv Airport.” He explained.

On board the plane were 163 Koreans, including 81 long-term residents and 82 short-term travelers, as well as 51 Japanese and their spouses of other nationalities, and 6 Singaporeans.

It is known that the government assigned seats to Koreans who wanted to board a military transport aircraft with regarding 230 available seats, and then proposed to Japan that Japanese passengers board when there were available seats.

Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs determines that there are regarding 440 long-term residents and 10 short-term Koreans remaining in Israel, and if they wish to leave the country, they are guiding them to do so by land or by air to a third country.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs official confirmed that Koreans living in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip are safe and said, “We are seeking ways to ensure their safety.”
