Continuing to put off the soil protection strategy is a fatal mistake. Valuable ground is lost every day.
Innsbruck (OTS) – Tyrol and Vienna would be in favor of target values for land consumption. But other countries are blocking it. A costly mistake.
The erosion of the soil must end. There are good reasons for it. After all, in Tyrol in particular, the endless expanse isn’t that far away. At least so far, you just have to ask the parties, they agree. But if the states don’t even agree on what is actually a sealed area, if every community needs its own commercial zone and the concept of land policy is conceived with the stereotypes of the 1970s, then we shouldn’t be surprised, if so 16 football fields continue to be built in Austria every day. By the way, half will be covered with concrete or asphalt.
Of course, not every construction project can be demonized. The need for housing is there, greater than ever, and the construction industry is an important sector of the economy. Of course, a commercial settlement may also make sense. But the last few months have shown that when it comes to trade and commerce, there is more relocation from one place to another than actual resettlement. What is needed is an awareness of the consequences of sealing and more creativity as to how further development can still be made possible.
A nationwide soil protection strategy would be all the more important. However, that is still on hold. A mistake. Every day that the issue is put on the back burner, more space is lost. A field there. A green space there. There are no good reasons that do not speak for binding target values, because this issue cannot be solved locally. Vienna and Tyrol would have taken this step. Other federal states blocked. Soil is not an inexhaustible resource.
