Hamas recently raided central and southern Israel and massacred more than 1,300 people, the vast majority of whom were civilians. The Military Rabbinate, who is responsible for receiving and identifying the remains, admitted that “the number of children is quite alarming” and because there are too many remains, incomplete and lack of identification methods, “it will be impossible to identify them following a while.”
Josh Wander, spokesman for Zaka, a burial organization that assists “rabbis,” told the Times of Israel that volunteers and the military face severe challenges in identifying child victims. Children do not have passports, documents, etc. as adults. It is easy to obtain information from the body. If the body is dismembered or damaged to the point where fingerprints cannot be collected, DNA identification is required, but this is a long and uncertain process for the family members.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that of the 854 civilian remains that have arrived in “Rabi”, 361 have been identified and 264 have been buried. The other 257 soldiers have been identified through fingerprints, teeth and military tags. The National Defense Forces also pointed out that many of the soldiers killed were killed following get off work or during music festivals.
