The Vienna NEOS invited people to a general meeting on Saturday. Federal party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger and the Vienna state spokesman, Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr, outlined the future plans in the Ankerbrot factory – for example for government work in Vienna. But terror in the Middle East was also in focus. There was harsh criticism of the rallies in the federal capital.
At the beginning of the event, a minute’s silence was held for the victims of Hamas’ escalation of violence in the Middle East. Dealing with pro-Palestinian demonstrations was also a central topic in the party leader’s speech. “Paying homage to terrorist organizations has absolutely no place in Vienna, it doesn’t suit Vienna,” said Wiederkehr.
You have to clearly show boundaries here. One can also lament the civilian victims in Gaza, but it is important to name where the terror comes from. “The conflict is taking place in the middle of Vienna,” he further stated. For example, videos of the recent (police-banned, note) gathering at Stephansplatz were circulating, in which terror was glorified.
There is a risk that children will also find out regarding it via social media. Wiederkehr recommended that parents delete the Tik Tok app on their children’s cell phones if it becomes too much for their mental health.
The party leader was generally convinced that the NEOS had established itself as an important force. They want to give courage in turbulent times. Because it’s not regarding discussing burgers or schnitzel. “Politicians have a damn duty to address problems, and that’s why we exist.”
Fight for a liberal democracy and a united Europe. “We are the only party of optimists.” You are a pioneer for democracy, which is constantly threatened. He was particularly affected by Russia’s war once morest Ukraine, Wiederkehr reported. His father himself fled from Russian tanks (from Hungary, note).
Education is a key to a self-determined and good life. The guiding principle of his work is: “You can only achieve education if you enjoy doing it.” You have to manage to inspire children and young people. Wiederkehr, who is responsible for the area as a city councilor, referred to corresponding initiatives in Vienna – such as those that can bring external educational offerings into schools.
There was only cautious criticism of the coalition partner. Wiederkehr mentioned the property transactions in allotment gardens from which SPÖ officials are said to have benefited. He finds this “indecent,” Wiederkehr makes clear – but at the same time he also referred to Lower Austria, where mayors have “prepared” dedications.
NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger also warned that trust in politics is continuing to decline. She criticized the ÖVP in the federal government, which she found had nothing better to do than plan a committee of inquiry once morest its own coalition partner.
The NEOS boss emphasized that the NEOS entered parliament ten years ago. “We can be proud of what we have created.” The Salzburg election – in which the NEOS were thrown out of the state parliament – was a “real setback”, admitted Meinl-Reisinger. “But it didn’t tear us apart.” You are not a “one-hit wonder”, you are making a positive promise of meaning: “The chance of a free and self-determined life.”
At the pink meeting today there was no voting on the agenda. A presidential election will not be held until next year. However, applications were submitted. In one of them, the NEOS set out demands in the area of integration. For example, you are in favor of a second year of free kindergarten to make it easier to acquire the German language. There are also calls for compulsory summer German courses.
On the one hand, parental work should be encouraged, but on the other hand – if there is a lack of willingness to cooperate – it should be sanctioned more rigorously. The integration proposal also calls for mandatory training for teachers on topics such as interculturality, diversity, anti-racism, anti-sexism and combating anti-Semitism and homophobia.
The NEOS demand for ethics education for everyone is also reiterated. It is also demanded that preventing extremism must be given high priority. In general, the pink party believes that challenges and problems from the “political left” are being negated, while right-wing parties are exaggerating problems in order to prevent any solution and to divide society with fear and agitation.
The Vienna FPÖ promptly described the pink meeting as an “embarrassing laughing stock”. Party leader Dominik Nepp sneered in a broadcast: “The pink squad with Christoph Wiederkehr at the helm has been absorbed into socialism and is just a cheap appendage of the Ludwig SPÖ. Wiederkehr has completely failed, especially in his areas of responsibility, education, integration and transparency.”
