Sol 905. This is the date — understand the 905th Martian day of its mission, i.e. September 8 — on which the NASA roverrover PerseverancePerseverance placed its Mastcam-Z on a new object that is intriguing to say the least. A rock that looks exactly like a sombrero!
A sombrero rock that can reveal information regarding past climate
The researchers imagine that it might have formed following a hardening of the outer envelope of the rock. The result of chemical attack and softening of the interior or the establishment of a crustcrust. The preferential erosion of the interior which can follow can give rise to astonishing hollowed forms. Astronomers also explain that behind the phenomenon, water/rock interactions are often hidden. Enough to open up some additional perspectives on the past climateclimate of the place and the waters which may have flowed on the surface of Mars.
The sombrero rock was also targeted by laser-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (Libs) analysis carried out using Perseverance’s SuperCam. Objective: to evaluate its composition and to better understand, from there, the process which led to its formation.
