Preparing for the Transition to Rich Natural Gas: A Guide by Monenergie.be

2023-10-14 07:09:31

Monenergie.beLast summer, many Belgian households switched from poor natural gas to rich natural gas. This has especially impacted owners of older household appliances. Next year, a new phase within the phased conversion is planned; it will be the turn of many other households (Flemish and Walloon). Below, Monenergie.be clarifies what this schedule will look like and what preparations you should make.

What is the difference between lean and rich natural gas?

Belgium imports 2 types of natural gas: lean gas and rich gas.

Lean gas, coming from the north of the Netherlands (Groningen), contains nitrogen and has a low calorific value. This means that a greater volume must be burned to obtain the same amount of energy.

The rich gas comes from Norway, the United Kingdom and Qatar. It does not contain nitrogen and has a high calorific value.

1.6 million households

As Dutch natural gas reserves are dwindling and following damage caused by nearby gas extraction, our northern neighbors are reducing their gas supplies. Consequently, Belgian natural gas managers are moving towards rich natural gas.

Around 1.6 million Belgian households/businesses in Brussels and a large part of the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg, Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant are making the transition. Other regions of our country already had rich gas.

Do you have to pay more for rich natural gas?

The natural gas that comes out of your pipeline has no impact on the amount of natural gas you receive, or the price you have to pay for it. Price differences between energy suppliers therefore do not depend on the type of natural gas.

Is your gas installation compatible?

However, switching to rich natural gas might cost you. Gas boilers and appliances running on natural gas with a production date prior to 1978 are not compatible with rich natural gas. In this case, you will have to replace some parts or even your entire device.

But some newer devices also require reconfiguration. Inspection and adjustment would cost you up to 150 euros for up to 3 devices. The fee must be paid by the homeowner although you may want to replace these older, less efficient appliances with more durable alternatives. You may also be entitled to a bonus in this context.

Tip for saving: Analyze your energy contract. By regularly comparing plans and suppliers, you can avoid paying too much for natural gas or electricity.
