Vatican: Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro said that the Vatican is ready to mediate the war following the conflict broke out once more in the Holy Land. The cardinal said the barbaric atrocities taking place in the Middle East and in Israel, Palestine and the Gaza Strip are painful. He also recalled Pope Francis’ appeal for peace during Sunday’s midday prayer.
Cardinal Pietro described the terrorist attack once morest Israel as inhumane. Last Saturday’s terrorist attack by Hamas and other soldiers once morest thousands of Israelis who were preparing to celebrate Simchat Torah, the end of the Sukkot holiday week, was inhumane.
The Holy See expresses full and firm condemnation. And we are concerned regarding the men, women, children and elderly held hostage in Gaza. We express our solidarity with the affected families. “We pray for those who are still traumatized by the war and for the wounded,” the Cardinal said.
It is necessary to regain a sense of reason, abandon the blind logic of hatred and reject violence as a solution. It is not known how much room there is for negotiations between Israel and Hamas. However, the discussion should be immediate. Discussion is essential to avoid the death of innocent citizens.
Peace is possible only on the basis of justice. The Latins liked to say, “Opus eustiatia pax,” without justice there can be no peace among men. The cardinal added that a two-state solution that allows Palestinians and Israelis to live together in peace and security while fulfilling the aspirations of the majority seems to be the greatest justice possible in the Holy Land.
The only major solution to ending the conflict is the immediate return of hostages, even those held by Hamas from previous conflicts. In this sense the heartfelt appeal made and repeated by Pope Francis in recent days is strongly renewed. Only that the lives of Palestinian citizens living in Gaza should not be endangered in Israel’s legitimate defense. In this conflict, as in any other human law, it is fair to be fully respected.
The Holy See is ready, as always, for any necessary mediation. Ready for any mediation to end the conflict. The security of the city of Jerusalem is a major issue. A solution can be found through direct negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The discussion will be facilitated by getting the encouragement and support of the international community.
Christians are an integral part of the land where Jesus was born, lived, died and rose once more. No one can imagine Palestine or Israel without the Christian presence. It has been there since the beginning. It is true that Gaza’s small Catholic community of regarding 150 families is suffering greatly. When one member suffers, the whole church suffers. And so we all suffer.
Let us pray for Israelis, Palestinians, Christians, Jews and Muslims. Let’s pray for the peace of Jerusalem… May there be peace for my brothers and friends, the Cardinal said
