Once retired, the feeling of a drop in purchasing power is less. Unlike their younger counterparts in the lower age group, Belgians aged over 65 automatically benefited from indexation of their pension. This is not the case for working people; certain socio-professional categories, including the self-employed, do not benefit from automatic increases in their salaries.
Pensioners have therefore suffered less from the rise in prices in 2023, especially since their budget expenditures linked to energy or food are lower.
On the other side of the age pyramid, Belgians aged 18 to 24 are also not very pessimistic regarding the evolution of their purchasing power. The latter declare that if not it has increased, it has at least remained constant in 2023.
For Philippe Defeyt, this greater optimism goes hand in hand with “greater job prospects“. “We can imagine that a young person who has a minimum of skills, the job market is favorable and we can therefore more easily integrate than a few years ago“.
