If you want to reach the Italian capital on May 26th, you first have to overcome 68.2 time trial kilometers, which were spread over two stages, and six mountain finishes.

Already on the first stage, a lot is demanded of the riders with the famous climb to the Superga. The first mountain arrival is on the program a day later in Santuario di Oropa (1st cat. / 1142 m).

After the Grande Partenza we head south and the sprinters get their chances in the following sections, but on the 6th stage from Viareggio to Rapolano Terme there are two long gravel sections that might shake up the rankings once more.

The next day there is a 37.2 kilometer long and mostly flat individual time trial to Perugia – although following the second measuring point there is a 6.5 kilometer long and four percent steep incline up to the finish. On the eighth day of the Giro, the second mountain finish (1st cat. / 1450 m) of the tour awaits the riders at Prati di Tivo, before the first week of racing concludes on the ninth day with a hilly stage to Naples.

From Pompei back to the north in the second week

The second week begins in Pompei in the Campania region of southern Italy and ends with the third mountain finish on the Bocca della Selva (1st cat. / 1392 m).

Then we head to the Adriatic Sea, where a mass sprint is expected in Francavilla del Mare. The 12th stage leads along the coast towards the north before turning left following around 80 kilometers. Inland, ten categorized climbs await the field before the finish in Fano is once once more on the Adriatic.

After a sprint stage, the time trial machines will be taken out of the team buses for the second time on the 14th day of the race. Desenzano del Garda is reached over 31 kilometers, which are once more mostly flat. The longest section is on the program the next day. Four mountain classifications are passed between Manerba del Garda and up to Livigno. After a short detour to Switzerland, the destination following 220 kilometers is on the Mottolino (1st cat. / 2385 m), which is climbed for the first time.

A few kilometers beforehand, the Forcola di Livigno is crossed, the pass road of which is at an altitude of 2,315 meters.

Showdown in the third week at Monte Grappa

After the second day of rest, the 16th stage continues extremely difficult, because both the Stelvio (HC / 2758 m) and the Passo Pinei (1st cat. / 1,437 m) have to be crossed before Monte Pana (2. Cat. / 1625 m) the fifth mountain arrival is coming up. The sixth is waiting the next day at Passo Brocon (1st cat. / 1610 m).

The section is short at 154 kilometers, but with the Passo Sella, Passo Rolle, Passo Gobbera and Passo Brocon there are four mountains in front of the peloton. The Brocon has to be conquered a second time, this time from the west, which is a first.

On the 18th stage in Padua in the Veneto region, the sprinters can reward themselves for their exertions of the previous days. The escapees then get a chance in Sappada. The decision regarding overall victory will be made on the penultimate day of the Giro. From Alpago it goes twice over Monte Grappa (1st cat. / 1675 m) before reaching the finish in Bassano del Grappa.

The grand finale takes place in Rome, where a detour to the Tyrrhenian Sea is made. From there it goes back to the capital, where a local round is completed several times. The destination of the 107th Tour of Italy is directly in front of the Colosseum.
