Microsoft has a multitude of tutorials published on its official portal, most of them focused on Windows, but today it decided to do something different and launched a “how to install Linux” tutorial. Yes, you read that right. Microsoft is teaching users how to install a competing system on their PCs.

The step-by-step instructions are available on the Microsoft Learn portal, which is dedicated to answering questions and helping users of Microsoft products and systems. The system is described as follows by the company in the tutorial:

Linux is an operating system, similar to Windows, but with many different versions due to the nature of being open source and fully customizable. To install Linux, you must choose an installation method and choose a Linux distribution.

The guide shows how to install Linux in four ways:

Installation with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL); Installation on a Linux virtual machine (VM) in the cloud; Installation on a Linux virtual machine (VM) on the local computer; Installation with a bootable Linux USB stick to use as the main system.

Just want to run Linux as your main operating system? If you’re good with a slightly more complicated installation process and don’t need access to Windows tools (like Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc), you can run Linux directly to access the full potential of your hardware without any virtualization or emulation overhead.

The tutorial covers various aspects of the installation, from preparing the machine and media, to configuring where the system will be stored and how to use distribution packages to keep the system and applications up to date. In addition to describing how it is possible to use the system in dual boot with Windows.

Among the Linux distributions available, Microsoft highlights Ubuntu for beginners, as it has a more friendly and easy-to-use interface, but also mentions others such as Arch Linux, Alpine and Kine. You can check out the full tutorial at the Source link below.

Speaking of Linux, the system is gaining more and more fans, having surpassed macOS among Steam users for the first time in history in August this year.
