Icon of the demonstration in support of Palestine at Al-Azhar

With an index finger pointing upward, a face covered with features of anger, and the chanting visible without sound, a picture of Karima Al-Rubi, in the vicinity of Al-Azhar Mosque, atop a wooden booth, leading a chant with hundreds behind her, became widely spread, in protest once morest what is happening in besieged Gaza. “Feminization” was present, not only in the image of Ruby, who was over 40 years old.

Al-Roubi considers that, even though the picture became on the “trend” list, that did not concern her. All she was happy regarding was that the picture carries the symbolism that Egypt, with its women and men, supports Palestine, and hopes that there will be a defense for its people. “I was there before the Friday call to prayer, and the picture was following Praying for regarding a few minutes, I was on that booth for only 10 minutes.”
Tariq Wajih, the photojournalist, was in the vicinity of the mosque, taking various pictures, but the sight of Al-Rubi attracted him to take several pictures. The heroine of the picture says that she saw many scenes that impressed her that day, from other women who participated strongly in that protest once morest what is happening in Palestine. “I heard one woman say, ‘Finally, finally,’ as if she was waiting for that moment to cheer for Palestine,” and Al-Rubi hopes that Palestine will be liberated, as an old dream that began with her since childhood. “Since I was young, I have been following the Palestinian cause. I have gone out in demonstrations before to support it, and I am in the process of preparing a massive campaign to boycott products from companies that support the occupation.”
Al-Roubi says that she used to engage in long discussions with her father when she was young, and by the time she entered the Faculty of Arts at the Faculty of Information at Ain Shams University, that interest had turned into work by participating in demonstrations and statements related to the Palestinian issue.
