The greatest Senator of all time is back home. Daniel Alfredsson is returning to the organization in a role to be determined, but one that will focus on player development, new team president Steve Staios told reporters Friday
Alfredsson was on the ice during the Senators’ practice Friday morning, helping players with drills. He doesn’t have an official title yet, but Staios told reporters he’ll be there “quite often.”
Staios added that he felt Alfredsson’s excitement when he approached him for the role, saying his “eyes lit up” when they discussed the details.
Now 50, Alfredsson began his NHL career in 1995, following being selected by the Sens in the sixth round the year before. He played 17 of his 18 NHL seasons in Ottawa and holds the records for goals (426), assists (682), points (1,108), game-winning goals (69) and is second behind Chris Phillips (1 179) for the number of matches played as a Senator.
He also won the Calder Trophy in 1996 and helped lead the Senators to 11 consecutive playoff appearances from 1997 to 2008. Alfredsson played the final season of his career in 2013-14 with the Detroit Red Wings.
