Sharjah, October 13 / WAM / The student film-making team consisting of 5 students from the College of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah won the Best Film Award for their work “Greedy Gaia” in the Film Hackathon Competition supported by the Abu Dhabi Culture and Arts Group as part of the Young Filmmakers Circle initiative. .
The competition comes as part of the closing activities of the first edition of the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design Film Festival, which was organized by the Design Film Festival in Cairo, “Film of My Design,” and which was held at the American University of Sharjah during the months of September and October 2023, where the program showcased seven original films by regional and international directors who presented stories. About resilient design, food culture and the environment amidst climate change under the theme “Earth Records”.
The winning student team, consisting of director Noura Abbas, producer Dina Khalaf, production team members Zeina Khalaf and Farah Khaled, and animation designer Hala Abu Al-Rub, won the grand prize for the best film produced within 48 hours, in addition to the award for best artistic direction. The film was chosen for its excellence in storytelling. The quality and creativity of the production, the film presents an unconventional view on sustainability, and shifts the focus from the oppressor to the oppressed.
Six other teams of multimedia students at the College of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah presented their short films, which they filmed and edited over the course of two days with the aim of shedding light on various topics such as sustainability, environmental awareness, and social issues related to the fields of design, architecture, and food production.
The films were screened during a ceremony held at the College of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah yesterday, attended by Dr. Reda bin Abdullah, Director of Education and Community at the Abu Dhabi Culture and Arts Group, Dr. Patrick Tanimura, Acting Consul General of the United States in Dubai, and Dr. Danielle Wood, Representing the Space Enablement Research Group of the MIT Media Lab.
Dr. Zinka Bojtic, Head of the Department of Arts and Design at the American University of Sharjah, noted that the first edition of the College of Architecture, Art and Design Film Festival program provided an opportunity to address the urgent need for environmental care. She said: The fields of design, architecture, food, materials and landscapes have become fertile ground for exploring topics of sustainability and climate change, and the hackathon provided an opportunity for students to share their voices in these important dialogues regarding the complex relationship between human activity and the environment.

She added: I congratulate the winners of this year’s film hackathon for their creativity and exceptional talents in making short films, and I also appreciate the participation of more than 35 male and female students in highlighting the inspiring goals of the competition, including its environmental commitment and conscious and responsible handling of issues of food, flexible design and nature, in line with the holding of COP28 in the Emirates. And a translation of our vision to promote sustainability through arts, architecture and design in particular.
Other awards included the Best Director Award, which was received by student Maria Bayraktar for her work “Kartha”, the Best Screenplay Award, which was received by students Kailani Narayan, Laura Grant, Taif Al-Ibrahim, and Ayesha Nahadiwala, for their work, “Frequency”, and the Best Cinematography Award, which was received by Wenxuan Sui. Maryam Sharaf for their work “Man vs. Nature”, and the Best Editing Award went to students Noumina Rakotonirina, Maryam Mansour and Khushi Arora for their work “Silent Consequences”; The Best Acting Award went to student Farah Diab for her work “Kartha”; The Best Sound Design Award went to students Maram Al-Issawi and Yara Ismail for their work “Planet/Humans,” and the Best Experimental Film Award went to students Lana Amini, Fahda Al-Babtain, Hind Al-Shamsi, Maryam Khalil, and Jana Khalifa for their work “Bound.”
It is worth noting that the College of Architecture, Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah offers a minor in Film Directing.
