More physical games at Best Buy next year?
Indeed, according to information from thedigitalbitsthe American company specializing in the sale of electronic equipment, is preparing to stop the sale of all physical media, potentially from the end of the first quarter of 2024.
Still according to thedigitalbits, this would concern not only in-store sales, but also online sales, which would be a strong decision for the future of the media given the importance of the chain across the Atlantic.
Although it mainly focuses on news related to the release of films on DVD and Blu Ray media and therefore does not talk regarding video games in its article, thedigitalbits mentions that all physical media are concerned.
The site also emphasizes that this will mark the end of limited editions from the brand which often has exclusive steelbooks and various bonuses, particularly on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray.
The logical continuation ?
While at first glance the outright removal of physical media from Best Buy’s plans may seem surprising, it nevertheless seems quite logical when we look at where the entertainment industry is heading.
On the video game side, Sony recently announced a PS5 Slim with a removable Blu-Ray player, while Microsoft’s plans seem to be moving towards a 100% digital Xbox Series X to replace the current console with a player.
If Phil Spencer indicated following the leaks that many things had changed, Microsoft was planning until recently only two 100% dematerialized consoles from 2024.
At a time when many games are coming out with missing features, requiring an update to work, or relying on an internet connection, physical games are under attack.
We often see it in your reactions on the subject, some are for a 100% dematerialized industry, while others rightly defend many advantages linked to physical media. If Best Buy’s decision is confirmed and generalized to other giants in the sector, there is, however, a strong chance that physical media will live its final hours, at least in the United States.
