Appointment of Ola Olukoyede as EFCC Chairman: Nigeria’s Fight Against Corruption Continues

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu signed this Thursday, October 12, the appointment of Ola Olukoyede as Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a renewable mandate of 4 years. The decision will be submitted to senators for approval.

He replaces Abdulrasheed Bawa, who was suspended on June 15 by the head of state, in order to allow an appropriate investigation into his conduct during his mandate.

Until then secretary general of the body responsible for investigating financial crimes such as fraud and money laundering, Ola Olukoyede handed over this position to Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda, whose appointment was also approved by the president for one mandate renewable for five years, pending Senate confirmation.

A lawyer by training, the new president of the Commission on Economic and Financial Crimes has over 22 years of experience in the field of fraud management and business intelligence. He has, among other things, served as chief of staff of the executive president (2016-2018), and secretary of the Commission (2018-2023).

His appointment at the head of the body comes in a context where the Bola administration is committed to fighting once morest the corruption which still plagues Africa’s largest economy, particularly in the oil sector. If we rely on official statistics, the country lost 2 billion USD in the 3rd quarter of 2022, due to oil theft.

On this, the strong man from Abuja has, since his accession to power, made the fight once morest corruption one of his priorities. His country is 154th in the world out of 180 countries in the Transparency International ranking (2021) relating to corruption in the world.
