Ensuring Security and Support for the Jewish Community in Belgium: Meeting with Vivaldi and Prime Minister

2023-10-12 13:56:00

This meeting aimed to respond to the concerns of leaders of Jewish organizations in Belgium. Since the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel and the response by the Jewish state, fears have been high in Belgium regarding possible reprisals once morest people associated directly or indirectly with Israel.

The first message from the head of Vivaldi was to assure his full “support for the Jewish population and the families who were affected” by the attack on Saturday October 7. “These acts of terrorism are not tolerable,” said the Flemish liberal.

”There will be no tolerance in our country for incitement to hatred, for violence. Thoughts are free, but inciting violence is something that will not be tolerated in our country.”

In response to the request made by representatives of the Jewish community, the Prime Minister assured that the security of Jews in Belgium and Belgians living in Israel was closely monitored by his executive. “Additional police officers have been placed in different locations in the past,” explained Alexander De Croo, referring to police officers placed in particular in front of Jewish institutions and synagogues. These sites are currently classified at level 3 of the terrorist alert. But security will be reinforced around sensitive sites. “We have done more, we will do more if it is necessary. This is an analysis that our security services do.”

The question of repatriation was discussed. Belgium will take steps to be able to repatriate people who have dual nationality, as Brazil or Germany have already done to compensate for the lack of commercial planes.

”We know that Belgians are stuck in Israel for the moment. In the coming hours, we will do everything to try to bring back those who are stuck now,” insisted the Prime Minister, before repeating his security position.

”I will be very clear. There will be no tolerance, neither for violence, nor for incitement to hatred, nor for demonstrations which incite violence or incite hatred.”
