A patent recently granted to Apple in Europe describes a system that would allow you to unlock other devices (such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, etc.) while wearing a virtual/augmented reality device — such as a pair of smart glasses or a headset like the Vision Pro.

According to the document, this feature would detect the user’s gaze and proximity to the device to be unlocked to perform authentication, preventing the user from having to remove the glasses/headset to be able to use features such as Face ID, for example. The gadgets, in turn, would exchange information with each other to enable unlocking.

Gaze detection, in turn, would take place through a camera facing the user’s face attached to the device. The pupil, iris and other ocular characteristics would also be measured by the glasses/headset to determine the angle of gaze and whether the user actually intends to unlock a device.

The patent text also mentions the possibility of the device having cameras facing the environment that would help identify other gadgets, although it is logical to imagine that these features would also use some type of wireless connection to determine the proximity of the device. The document also mentions two possibilities for activating the feature: when the user looks at the position of the device to be unlocked or when he looks directly at the device — which refers to a another patent granted to Maçã in 2021.

As you can see in the images, Apple illustrates a device much more similar to a pair of glasses than a headset like the Vision Pro to explain the concept, but it is entirely possible that something along these lines will also be brought to the device to be launched. early next year.
