The American director Mike Flanagan, creator of the successful series “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, returns to the horror genre with “The Fall of the House of Usher”, a contemporary adaptation of that very famous story from 1839 written by Edgar Allan Poe that arrives today on the Netflix streaming platform.
Crossed by themes such as madness, isolation, death and guilt, the story of that poet and writer who became an undisputed classic of American Gothic literature now lands on the screen with this version by Flanagan, also director of « Doctor Sleep” (2019) and other mysterious and macabre strips such as “Midnight Mass” and “The Midnight Club.”
The original story, one of the most prominent in Poe’s work, unfolds through a narrator who becomes the only witness of an inexplicable episode following being summoned by Roderick Usher, an eccentric and sick childhood friend, to the mansion. where she lives with her sister, Lady Madeline, who also suffers from a very delicate state of health.
Set in current times, this eight-episode adaptation portrays Roderick and Madeline as a ruthless and calculating pair of siblings played by the renowned Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell, who built an empire of wealth and absolute privilege from the pharmaceutical company Fortunato.
Under the magnifying glass of Justice for an opioid crisis that is plaguing the country, the truth and the past behind the Ushers comes to light when the six heirs of the dynasty, sons and daughters of Roderick with different mothers, begin to die one by one in violent ways just when an intriguing woman – played by Carla Gugino – intervenes in their lives.
This somewhat inexplicable presence, capable of playing with the minds of the characters to the limits of madness and that moves like a kind of executor of destiny, will be pursued by Madeline and her lethal lawyer Arthur Pym (Mark Hammill), although little by little. Little will be revealed regarding his true link with family history and the origin of his incredible and unpunished fortune.
In this version of “The Fall of the House of Usher”, and as in the best of his previous projects, Flanagan builds in time a horror story that does not depend on scares and shocks.s -although without abandoning the supernatural and the brutal- to captivate audiences; and it succeeds in introducing a strong dramatic component with different readings and connected between generations.
In statements to the specialized press that he gave a year ago, still in full preparation, Flanagan announced that the strip “is crazy and is quite different” from what he did before, “but in the opposite direction”: “My favorite way of To describe it to people is that ‘Hill House’ is like a string quartet, and ‘Bly Manor’ is a delicate piece of classical piano music, while ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is heavy metal, it’s rock and roll. roll,” he said.
«I think it’s the closest I’m going to get to detective suspense. “It’s colorful, dark, bloody, evil and funny, aggressive and terrifying,” she listed to describe the tone and spirit of his new proposal.
For this, the director and showrunner once once more has several recurring performers in his productions in the cast, such as Gugino herself, Kate Siegel, T’Nia Miller, Henry Thomas, Katie Parker, Robert Longstreet, Samantha Sloyan, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli , Michael Trucco, Zach Gilford, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel and Igby Rigney.
