History
Wheeling, W. Va. – After the high of Homecoming and Family Weekend, the Wheeling University Men’s Soccer team (0-11-1, 0-9-1) returned to Bishop Schmitt Field on Wednesday night. They hosted West Virginia Wesleyan, but a late push from the Bobcats was enough to sink the Cardinals 5-0. Freshman Julio D’Lima paced the Cardinal’s offensive attack in the effort.
Despite the final score, it was an even game in terms of shots taken, with Wheeling outshooting the Bobcats 16-15 over the 90 minutes of play. In the first half, the Cardinals held the ball for the majority of the half, having several offensive opportunities through the first 45 minutes. After West Virginia Wesleyan took the first shot two minutes into the game, The Cardinals came back with their first shot attempt in the third minute. Johannes Haugerud would set the ball towards the net but it end up going high as the Cardinals mightn’t get on the board. Over the next 30 minutes, the Cardinals out shot West Virginia Wesleyan 6-3, but it was the Bobcats that got on the board in the 33rd minute. Max Evans found the back of the net for the Bobcats and that would be the lone goal of the half as they went into locker room leading 1-0.
Of the seven first half shots for the Cardinals, two of them landed on net, as Jon-Michael Gordon and Kudakwashe Chitani Beach put shots on goal. In the second half, The Cardinals came out on the offensive with D’Lima sending a shot on goal in the 47th minute there was knocked down by West Virginia Wesleyan’s Logan Nelson to keep it a one goal game. D’Lima would have another shot on goal just a minute later but was once once more denied as the Cardinals took the first five shots of the second half. After their early onslaught, it was the Bobcats turn and they took advantage scoring four second half goals, two of those coming on penalty kick opportunities. When all was said and done, West Virginia Wesleyan walked away with a 5-0 victory as they outshot Wheeling 10-9 over the final 45 minutes to clinch the victory.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was Julio D’Lima to finish with four shots, two of those shots on goal. D’Lima now sits third on the team in shots (14) and tied for third in shots on goal (4) during his freshman season. He was one of four cardinals to finish with multiple shots on the day as Johannes Haugerud and Jon-Michael Gordon each added three shots, one on goal. Richard Afolayanka rounded out the day by taking two shots coming in off the bench. Austin Aaron drop the starting net and face eight shots on the day, saving three of them, to wrap up his evening. As the Cardinals continue to go through the month of October, they looked to grow on the field as this young team gets their footing.
The Wheeling University Men’s Soccer team returns to action when they hit the road on Sunday, October 15th, as they take on Salem in non-conference action with kickoff at 2 PM.
