Luca Brecel, reigning world snooker champion, will he be suspended? In any case, he attracted the wrath of Barry Hearn, honorary president of the World Snooker Tour (WST). He is not the only one. The Belgian and four other players, including the two multiple world champions Mark Selby and John Higgins decided to take part in an exhibition tournament in Macau, rather than taking part in the Northern Ireland Snooker Open, the official tournament of the international circuit. The other two players affected are Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Ali Carter.
The catch is that they are not contractually allowed to do this. They have the right not to participate in an official tournament if they wish, but they cannot participate in another event at the same time. The fact that they all made this choice had the gift of angering Barry Hearn, who publicly demanded a disciplinary sanction, a fine, or even a suspension for the five concerned. He did not mince his words on the subject, judging that the “selfish” players had “sold their souls” for money.
We do not yet know the nature of the sanction if it is confirmed, but Barry Hearn seems determined not to let this decision go unanswered.
