The Steaming Satellites around Borchardt are among the most excellent live bands in the country. Before her appearance in Linz with her new album “Andromeda” in the Linzer Posthof, the singer and songwriter gave insights into his world of thoughts,
OÖN: “Andromeda” is regarding relationships that are not good for you and ways to escape them. Was this intended as a concept?
Max Borchardt: Also. Due to the Corona period, there was a lot of song material available. Of course, I also experienced some difficult times in relationships around me, and I think everyone struggled a bit during this time. “Andromeda” is very personal, but it also addresses the question of what you can do as a couple in a relationship crisis. How do you get out? In a difficult relationship, the point may be reached at some point where both of you think: I don’t want it to be like that anymore. The album is regarding how I can avoid that.
It’s almost a therapeutic approach. Do you feel the same way in retrospect?
I was really hesitant regarding releasing the album because it’s very personal. If you hold a mirror up to yourself, it can often be very sobering. I really thought for a long time what was wrong with me. The album has been finished for half a year now, but I haven’t wanted to or been able to listen to it for a long time.
Why?
It always put me in the desperate position I was in. Back then it was the helplessness of still hanging on to a failed love. I talk regarding how I felt, but it takes this music of good feelings. Since the album came out, it’s been liberating because the topic is now a thing of the past.
What did you learn regarding yourself from this experience?
Above all, I shouldn’t stress myself out so much. You often take things too seriously than how they actually are.
The sound of “Andromeda” is much more affirming than the content. At the same time the songs are rousing, like “Call It A Deal”. Isn’t that a contradiction?
In the end, everything is a little part of life. I also like listening to feel-good music, even if the lyrics are often difficult. For me, Motown music is the ultimate in music history. There is always conflict in the lyrics, but then the music is for life. This is the most honest form.
The reputation of a fantastic live band precedes you. Is interaction with the audience the essence of your musical existence?
We have cool fans who make it really easy for us at concerts because they accept us for who we are. We are really looking forward to the tour and of course to the performance at the Posthof. The samples were promising.
Concert: October 13th, 8 p.m., Posthof Linz (Support: Catalyst)
