Austria’s women’s selection 65+ with team captain Maja Kerschbaum, Inge Pils-Feichter, Silvia Reigl and doubles specialist Hildegard Bruggraber defeated the Netherlands 3-0 in the second group game following a 2-1 win over Germany. This puts them in the final round of the top eight, where the top-seeded Americans are waiting.
The ÖTV women’s team 75+ with team captain Heiderose Toth, Luise Moser, Walpurga Stefanofsky and Margot Passegger also won the opening match once morest Brazil 3-0. In the second game, Argentina was defeated 2-1. The last preliminary round game was once morest the favored Americans. Here, the home team clearly lost 3-0 due to bad luck with injuries and is now playing among 15 nations for places five to eight.
In the men’s 70+ category, Austria’s runner-up team from last year is at the start. After a 3-0 win once morest Ireland, team captain Alex Haupt-Buchenrode, Harald Hellmonseder, Günther Richter and Alfred Ötsch also defeated Denmark 3-0. In the last group game once morest France, Haupt-Buchenrode made it 1-0, but following Hellmonseder lost in the second singles, the doubles had to be decided. The ÖTV men’s team 75+ under team captain Helmut Flagel, Hans-Dietrich Heißl, Heinrich Griessmaier and Hans Pifrement also clearly won their opening match 3-0 over Zimbabwe. The second task once morest Germany was also no problem for the seven-placed domestic aces. A 2-1 win once morest Austria’s neighboring country, with the decision having already been made in the individual rounds, ensured a place in the round of the top eight. Denmark is waiting there.
The red-white-red men 65+ had a break on the first match day. The team with team captain Christian Hebenstreit, Karl Scheidl, Hannes Zischka and Hans Vieghofer then played their first encounter once morest the top-seeded, overpowering Australians, once morest whom there was nothing to be gained at 0:3. An improvement was evident in the second game, but Denmark still won once morest Austria 2-1.
