Dismantling of Two Stolen Vehicle Trafficking Rings in Liège: Over 150 Vehicles Recovered

Two stolen vehicle trafficking rings were dismantled at the start of the week in the Liège region following twelve searches, the Liège public prosecutor’s office reported on Wednesday evening. Nine people were placed under arrest warrant in these two cases, which currently concern more than 150 stolen or hijacked vehicles.

The searches took place on Monday, as part of two investigations.long-term“, in the Liège region (Liège, Grâce-Hollogne, Herstal, Olne and Visé). They mobilized around 120 agents coming in particular from the federal judicial police of Liège as well as special units, and from several local police zones. A first group of perpetrators engaged in trafficking in vehicles that were either stolen, misappropriated for rental abroad, or by “rip deal“during sales (by trickery or with violence), explains the Liège public prosecutor’s office. A second group specialized in theft with the so-called operating mode”keyless” allowing, via interception of the frequency of the remote control keys, to copy their data onto a new blank key and thus open the targeted vehicle. These two files currently concern more than 150 stolen or hijacked vehicles.

The searches led to the discovery of 15 disguised stolen vehicles or property of the suspects, 35,400 euros in cash, electronic and technical equipment for the thefts.keyless” and numerous false or falsified documents to disguise the vehicles. Investigators also got their hands on stolen or misappropriated registration marks, numerous GSMs, smartphones and data carriers having been used for trafficking and parts from stolen vehicles.

Twelve people were arrested, nine of whom were placed under arrest warrant. The division “Organized Crime” from PJF Liège-Huy-Verviers will be responsible for continuing the investigation.
