Valve reported, that some time ago, attackers hacked into the accounts of several developers and updated their games with malware. This attack affected fewer than 100 Steam users who currently had infected games installed on their computers. Valve promptly warned them of the danger via email.

Despite the fact that the attack was not effective, Valve decided to strengthen Steam security measures to ensure this doesn’t happen once more. Starting October 24, 2023, the company will begin requiring developers to link a phone number to their Steamworks account in order to publish a build in the standard branch of the released application.

Now, if you try to update a build of a released app in the default branch, Steam will send you an SMS with a confirmation code. It will also need to be entered to make another branch standard. Note that the code will not be required if the app has not yet been released or if you are updating a beta branch.

Only accounts that administer your affiliate group in Steamworks can invite other users, and inviting a new user requires that they verify their email address. In this update, we added one more security measure: now, before sending an invitation to a new user, the administrator must enter the code from SMS.

Valve noted that the company will not make any exceptions to the new rule. This means that developers who don’t have a phone will need to get one or find another way to receive SMS.

Valve previously announced that company employees will hold a question and answer session with fans.

Valve employees will answer questions from fans – they are collected until October 16 Editorial articles

However, asking regarding Half-Life 3 won’t work.
