In Mauritaniaon September 9, 2023, the National Institute for Public Health Research notified a confirmed case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (FHCC).
She is a 23-year-old housewife living in the locality of Liberdistrict of Barkeolregion ofMorning, in the south of the country. She had no history of tick bites. On September 5, 2023, she experienced symptoms of high fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal and joint pain and received symptomatic treatment at home. Due to a persistent high fever, she was transported the next day to the Nouakchott National Hospital, where she suffered bruising and began to bleed from her nose. A blood sample was collected and sent to the National Public Health Research Institute, where it was tested by PCR for CCHF, dengue and Rift Valley fever. The patient was confirmed positive for CCHF virus on September 9.
Two suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever, the grandmother and aunt of the confirmed case, were evacuated to Kiffa regional hospital on August 28, 2023 and subsequently died. The blood sample taken from the aunt tested negative for CCHF, dengue and Rift Valley fever on September 2, 2023, while the grandmother was not tested. No epidemiological link has been clearly established between the confirmed case and the two deaths, although they are from the same family.
This is the second confirmed case of CCHF recorded in Mauritania since the beginning of 2023, a period when 70 cases of CCHF were suspected (see the news of August 3).
Outbreaks of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever are recurrent in Mauritania.
