“Schönbrunn. The “Imperial Summer Residence” was ceremoniously presented on October 10, 2023 at a reception in the White Gold Rooms in Schönbrunn Palace.

Vienna (OTS) The extensive publication “Schönbrunn. “The Imperial Summer Residence” impressively conveys and documents the current state of knowledge regarding the construction and furnishing history of Schönbrunn Palace, its outbuildings and the garden with its sculptures and garden architecture. On 552 pages and richly illustrated, the work underlines the importance of Schönbrunn as a baroque complex. Almost 150 years following the first Schönbrunn monograph commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph, the over 500-page book was created as a collaboration between the Schönbrunn Group and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The ceremony took place on October 10, 2023 in the White Gold Rooms of Schönbrunn Palace.

Elfriede Iby and Anna Mader-Kratky act as editors and co-authors of the extensive work, while Elisabeth Hassmann, Herbert Karner, Werner Telesko and Günther Buchinger were recruited as additional authors.

The history of Schönbrunn begins in the 12th century with the first documented mention of the Katterburg estate, which was then owned by the Klosterneuburg Monastery. In 1569 Katterburg became the property of the House of Habsburg and has been called Schönbrunn following the Schönen Brunnen there since 1642. At the end of the 17th century, the important Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach provided the plans for a hunting lodge, which Maria Theresia later had converted into her summer residence at great expense. While the Empress put a lot of effort into furnishing the palace, her husband Franz Stephan was particularly interested in the design of the extensive palace park. The last structural interventions took place at the beginning of the 19th century, when the facades received their current appearance. On the occasion of Franz Joseph’s marriage to Elisabeth, known as Sisi, new furnishings were carried out once more.

With its conversion into an imperial summer residence in the middle of the 18th century, Schönbrunn was given a special place in the history of the Viennese court and has since then been considered a summer counterpart to the Vienna Hofburg as a city residence. Schönbrunn has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996 and is visited by millions of guests from all over the world every year. It is therefore important to preserve this special place in Austrian history for future generations and to secure knowledge regarding it in the long term.

She will succeed Dr. Iby as head of science. We are very proud of this richly illustrated new standard work Construction history and furnishings of Schönbrunn Palace”.

Univ.-Doz. Dr. Herbert Karnerhead of the art history research department
at the Institute for Research on the Habsburg Monarchy and the Balkan Region (IHB) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences: “The book regarding Schönbrunn Palace, which was created through a successful cooperation between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Schönbrunn Group, meets the highest scientific standards, but at the same time is for written for a broad readership that goes far beyond the specialist audience. This convincingly meets two requirements that play a central role in the academy’s self-image.”

Dr. Elfriede Iby Head of the scientific department of the Schönbrunn Group: After working in Schönbrunn for almost 30 years, it was very important to me that the knowledge I had accumulated and the many new insights that I was able to gain through the numerous restorations were not lost. The most suitable medium for this was a scientifically sound and richly illustrated publication regarding the Schönbrunn summer residence. It is not only aimed at specialist audiences, but will certainly also appeal to readers with an affinity for art and culture.

dr. Anna Mader-Kratky, future head of the scientific department of the Schönbrunn Group: The imperial summer residence Schönbrunn with the palace, its extensive outbuildings and the baroque palace park has been preserved in its entirety, which also makes the facility so valuable for research. For the new Schönbrunn book, we compared this rich collection with historical plans, views and written sources in order to document the development of the ensemble. Because knowledge of the past is the key to understanding the significance of Schönbrunn as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
