Dorothy Hoffner, a Chicago woman whose recent skydive might make her the world’s oldest person to jump from an airplane according to Guinness World Records. she has passed away. She was 104 years old.
Joe Conant, a close friend of Hoffner, said staff at the Brookdale Lake View residence found her dead Monday morning. Apparently, she died in her sleep on Sunday night, she added.
Conant, who is a nurse, said he met Hoffner — whom he called Grandma at her request — several years ago when he worked as a caregiver for another resident at the facility. Hoffner had amazing energy and was lucid.
“She was tireless,” he said Tuesday. “She wasn’t one of those who took a nap in the followingnoon, nor one of those who didn’t go to any event, dinner or anything else. She was always there, totally present. She always kept going. “.
On October 1, Hoffner made a tandem jump that might put her in the record books as the world’s oldest skydiver. She jumped from a plane at 4,100 meters (13,500 feet) at Skydive Chicago, in Ottawa, Illinois, 140 kilometers (85) southwest of Chicago.
“Age is just a number,” Hoffner told the cheering crowd shortly following touching down. This was not a new activity for her: her first jump was at 100 years old.
Conant said he is working on paperwork to ensure that Guinness World Records certifies Hoffner posthumously as the world’s oldest skydiver, but he expects the recognition will take some time.
The current record was set in May 2022 by 103-year-old Swede Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson.
