The body detection sensor present on the iPhone 12 would be responsible for the decision of the National Frequency Agency to temporarily stop its marketing.
Apple has published new information regarding its update, iOS 17.1, particularly with regard to French considerations on the iPhone 12. Since September 12, 2023, Apple’s phone model has been banned for sale in France, due to of exceeding the wave emissions authorized by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR).
Apple announced, a few days later, that it was working on a corrective update. The company published, in a press release this Tuesday, October 10explanations as to the reason for these exceedances, in addition to indicating that they have been taken into account in this next update, which should be deployed in the coming days.
Detection sensors
According to Apple, the ANFR testing protocol is not suitable for the “body detection sensors” system. These sensors allow the phone to detect “when it is placed on a static surface, such as a table, and therefore not held in the hand or placed in a pocket”.
So, when the iPhone detects that it is not near a body, it increases the transmission power, “with the aim of optimizing performance”.
However, this variable is not taken into account in the ANFR tests. The specific absorption rate (SAR) limit indicated by the ANFR must be respected, whether the phone is in the hand or placed on a table, hence the Agency’s decision.
Integrated with iOS 17.1
Although Apple indicates that “this decision does not comply with international standards”, the company has still integrated it into its next update, iOS 17.1, which complements iOS 17, released on September 18 . From then on, the iPhone 12 will no longer increase the authorized power at all when it detects that it is not near a body.
A change that might have consequences in areas with low coverage: cellular power might be reduced. Apple says, however, that “most users should not notice the difference.”
For now, the iOS 17.1 update is only available in beta version, intended for developers. It should be rolled out to all compatible devices by the end of October.
