The Wolverines Dominate Possession in Scoreless Draw Against No. 19 MSU: University of Michigan Men’s Soccer Team Remains Undefeated in Big Ten Conference Play

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The university of Michigan men’s soccer team earned its second straight shutout and remains unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play following putting on the pressure in a scoreless draw once morest No. 19 Michigan State on Tuesday night (Oct. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Wolverines (2-3-7, 1-0-5 Big Ten) dominated throughout the entire match once morest the top-20 Spartans (6-0-5, 2-0-3 Big Ten), holding the possession for 60 percent of the match and testing the keeper four times including putting three shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of play.

With the momentum on Michigan’s side, Which Rogers put a shot on goal that was saved by the Spartans keeper before Alex Waggoner followed it up with a header less than a minute later that was picked up by the MSU keeper in the closing 15 minutes. U-M continued to put the pressure on MSU as the clock wound down but was unable to come up with the golden goal in the hard-fought match.

The Wolverines controlled the pace of the first half as they held possession for more than half of the first 45 minutes of play. The Spartans looked to strike first, but Matthew Fisher came up big to cut off the attacker before they were able to get a shot off and U-M settled into the match. Goldson made his first save of the night with a dive to his right in the 22nd minute.

Michigan dominated the final four minutes of the first half with three shots as the two teams were scoreless heading into the halftime break.

Jason Bucknor had Michigan’s first chance of the second half as he took the ball up the left flank and made a move around his defender before firing a shot that was blocked by MSU in the 62nd minute. The Wolverines continued to control the pace of the game and kept the momentum as Rogers fired a shot on goal in the 73rd minute and Waggoner followed it up with a shot on goal less than a minute later.

Goldson came up with what was his biggest save of the night on a ball that bounced into the box in the 82nd minute and MSU attempted a bicycle kick that was punched over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless. Following the goal kick from Goldson, Waggoner tested the Michigan State keeper for the second time and Michigan continued to pressure offensively as it brought the ball up the field for the final minute of play. Blevins chased as the 10-second countdown was on but might not get off a last-second shot.

Up next, the Wolverines will play host to No. 8 Notre Dame next Tuesday (Oct. 17) at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
