Health | Hospitals: six million to strengthen the security of establishments in the region

In the adult emergency waiting room at the North hospital (15th), Hervé makes rounds between the patients who enter and the families who are waiting, exchanges a word, shuttles towards the caregivers. For seven years, the 51-year-old mediator from the Marseille social mediation association (AMS) has been working in these corridors to prevent and ease tensions when they arise.

We are confronted daily with situations that can get out of hand. In general, dialogue defuses everything but sometimes that is not enough. The waiting room concentrates frustration and worry, details the agent. Since 2020, we feel that things are changing, people are angry, you can feel it in a look, in the dry and aggressive way of speaking to nurses.

This is also the observation made by the National Observatory of Violence in the Health Environment (ONVS), which points to a 40% increase in these acts between 2020 and 2022 in establishments in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Local counterpart of the national action plan for the safety of professionals announced at the end of September by the Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Paca presented yesterday its system for hospitals in the region.

We must put a stop to the progression of violence which affects all establishments“, immediately asked Denis Robin, director of the ARS, announcing an investment of three million million, in addition to those already allocated each year at the national level, for 31 establishments, in order to strengthen the security of the premises and premises by the end of the year.

Strengthening video surveillance in premises and in car parks, access controls, alarm and alert devices, staff training, patient awareness…”the establishments surveyed by a flash survey told us regarding their problems and their needs“, specified Denis Robin.

920 incidents of violence at AP-HM in 2023

Concretely, these six million euros should be distributed in the coming weeks between the establishments which have requested it, from Bouches-du-Rhône to Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

This plan is necessary, there is nothing more contradictory than violence in the space of a hospital“, insisted François Crémieux, director of the AP-HM. In 2023 in Marseille hospitals, 920 incidents were recorded, attacks on people (insults, threats, attacks, etc.) and property (theft, damage, etc.) combined, compared to 770 incidents in 2022.

It is still unclear what is causing more reporting and increased violence“, specifies François Crémieux.

For now, however, 124 members of healthcare staff have already filed complaints this year, compared to 65 last year.

In the emergency room, we are clearly feeling this resurgence and with these allocations, we will be able to move forward, expand the waiting room for example. But also to ensure that caregivers no longer feel alone“, hopes Amélia Bordais, head of the department at the North hospital, this year, 349 incidents of violence have already been reported.

Faced with this endemic phenomenon, the ARS is already planning to put six million euros back on the table in 2024.
