(Ecofin Agency) – The privatization plan for the Moroccan national carrier no longer seems relevant. With the new strategic attributions assigned to it, RAM rather benefits from the support of the State to become a juggernaut of civil aviation.
Royal Air Maroc is preparing to launch a call for tenders by the end of 2023 to acquire 200 aircraft for delivery over the next 10 years, revealed to Archyde.com Abdelhamid Addou, the CEO of the company. The order will mainly include medium-haul, but also long and short-haul to strengthen its competitiveness in a growing African market.
The announcement aligns with the program contract recently signed with the government to quadruple its fleet by 2037, and it comes especially a few days following the designation of Morocco to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal. “What we have already prepared for 2030 will put us in a very good position to host this World Cup”.
RAM has in fact been positioned as a strategic player in the policy of the Shereef kingdom to help achieve the master plan for the tourism sector, which should attract up to 17.5 million tourists in 2026 and generate 12 billion USD in revenue. The record tourist arrivals date back to 2019 with 13 million visitors, a figure which crumbled during Covid-19 before recovering last year.
According to official forecasts, 2019 performances should be exceeded this year, with the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism already showing a flow of 10.2 million visitors welcomed between January 1 and August 31, 2023.
For the general director of Royal Air Maroc, the summits and other major international meetings hosted by the country constitute a catalyst for the sector and a favorable platform for seeking financing for the company’s expansion program.
